VB-3 is a multilayered composite material, which provides a shock absorbing, noise penetration barrier and thermal insulation. The isolation layer is constructed of a closed cell reinforced neoprene which decouples the floating lead septum from the vibrating source structure (floorboards etc.). The lead septum is a floating wall, which, because of its mass and relative thinness, is one of the most effective noise penetration barrier materials used for transmission loss. The surface layer of reinforced neoprene is used to protect the lead septum and maintain a "sealed" airspace for thermal insulation.
